What is a souq? Souq is a traditional and local Arabic term for the word "market". Nizwa souq is a traditional market place in Oman 2 hours away from the capital Muscat. There are only couples of traditional market places in the country set in the early days and Nizwa souq is one of them. Seemingly, Oman is a country remarkable for preserving cultural antiques.

Tourists and visitors alike appreciate the traditional and cultural look of the market which displays earthen pots and some traditional Omani items.

The souq most likely opens everyday; the stalls, butchers, pottery, date shops, gun shops (for hunting), hardware stores, tourist shops, jewelry, tailors. However, live goats and cattle markets are held every Friday morning.

Though the souq has been modernized, still visitors can sense the way of how the traditional business was done just like in ancient times.

It is believed that frankincense, one of the gifts at the birth of Jesus Christ was originally from Oman due to the plenty of presence of frankincense trees in its desserts. And evidently there was once prosperous frankincense trade in ancient times of the country which is still reflected in the thriving perfume trade at many of the souqs until today. Luban is the local term of frankincense; an aromatic resin used in incense and perfumes.

A simple glimpse of one of the country's many heritage is worth a day of wandering around. It is a place worth visiting as it is also adjacent to the magnificent old Nizwa Fort just a few meters away.
